Originally constructed in 1957 with a building addition in 1996, the existing roof, siding, and windows for the Preston Truck Station needed replacing. The truck station underwent a complete building envelope upgrade, where the Minnesota Department of Transportation replaced the roof, siding, and windows to improve energy efficiency and aesthetics. All proposed building materials had to meet current codes and expectations for low maintenance while not detracting from the adjacent Veterans Cemetery.
TKDA reviewed the structural plans for the roof to confirm the existing conditions met the Minnesota Building Code. Our structural analysis determined a roof step between the original building and the addition increased snow drift load to the original roof, which overstressed roof joists. We recommended adding steel joists to improve the roof capacity and meet code-required snow loads.
